Under the sponsorship of the San Joaquin County Historical Museum (SJCHM)'s Loy-Funamura Center for Chinese and Japanese History and Culture, you are cordially invited to a Stockton Chinese community event, "Sam Fow Roots," taking place at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, located in the southern reaches of the former Stockton Chinatown, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm. This event will include a gathering of the descendants of the early Chinese merchant and working families of Stockton's Chinatown.
Sam Fow means Third City in Cantonese, with Stockton being the third city of California during the Gold Rush era and the gateway to the southern Mother Lode gold mines.
The event will start with the story behind native son Russ Low’s newest book, "Chinatown Orphans on Sonora Street," an inspirational tale of the Fong children who survived the Depression as a family without parents in Sam Fow in the 1930s and 1940s.
Then in an open forum, guests who grew up in Stockton Chinatown or who are long-time residents, will have the opportunity to talk about their Stockton story. Those attending may listen to the stories and compare them with their own experiences.
Join them as they recreate the unique world of Sam Fow from 1910 -1950. Former Stockton Chinatown residents as well as those who are interested in hearing their stories are invited. This event is free, but registration is required due to limited seating capacity.
